When Is Birth Certificate Attestation Required?
An attested birth certificate is mandatory in several international situations:
Birth Certificate Attestation Process in Mumbai
Notary Attestation
Your Maharashtra birth certificate is first attested by a licensed Notary Public who verifies and stamps the document.
Mantralaya (Home Department) Attestation
For personal documents issued in Maharashtra, attestation from the Mantralaya (Maharashtra state secretariat) is mandatory. The Home Department authenticates the certificate after verifying with the issuing authority β typically the Municipal Corporation (BMC or other local body).
MEA Attestation / Apostille
After Mantralaya attestation, the document is submitted to the Ministry of External Affairs. For Hague Convention countries, the MEA issues an Apostille sticker. For non-Hague countries, a standard MEA stamp is provided.
Embassy Attestation
For non-Hague countries (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain), the attested birth certificate must also be submitted to the respective embassy in India.
