What Is a Single Status Certificate?
A Single Status Certificate โ also called a Bachelorhood Certificate or Unmarried Certificate โ is a document that confirms an individual is legally unmarried and free to marry. It is required by foreign authorities when an Indian national wishes to marry abroad or register their marriage in a foreign country.
Like all personal documents, this certificate must be attested before it is accepted internationally.
When Is a Single Status Certificate Required?

Preparation of Affidavit
A notarized affidavit declaring single/unmarried status is prepared and signed before a Notary Public in Mumbai. This affidavit forms the basis of the Single Status Certificate.
SDM / Mantralaya Attestation
The certificate is attested by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) or the Home Department (Mantralaya) to authenticate the declaration at the state level.
MEA Attestation / Apostille
The MEA certifies the document for international use. An Apostille is issued for Hague Convention countries.
Embassy Attestation
For non-Hague countries, the document is attested by the respective embassy in India.
